Young Adults Fight Back with The Trend ‘Ok Boomer’

“Ok Boomer, it’s a [trend] that makes the Boomer Generation look out of touch,” says Conan O’Brien on his late-night talk show. ‘Ok Boomer’ is a trend on the rise for many post-millennials in America. Post-millennials are also known as Generation Z typically referred to as those born between the years 1995 to the present. The New York Times released an article stating that the peak of this trend was marked when a middle-aged male posted a viral video of himself stating that the Generation Z population is juvenile. As this video began to spiral over the internet, many teenagers and young adults responded with a short, catchy phrase: “Ok boomer.”

Those who are part of Generation Z are defending themselves using their utmost advantage: technology and social media. With the majority of the population from Generation Z being quite acclimated to social media, the trend ‘ok boomer’ easily spread and became the center of internet attention. The phrase ‘ok boomer’ symbolizes Generation Z’s rally against Boomers and other older generations who left Generation Z with the short end of the stick. Inequality, rising living costs, ongoing climate change are a few examples of such.

The ‘Ok Boomer’ is simply Generation Z’s way of protesting. Teenagers and college students are putting this sarcastic-toned phrase on t-shirts, water bottles, and phone cases and selling them as merchandise items. Furthermore, they are using social media platforms such as Instagram to post pictures of themselves wearing these merch items. Generation Z is implementing this phrase as a statement to older

generations that change is bound to happen.

Additionally, some state that being a Boomer is simply a mindset – anyone who is reluctant towards change can be labeled as a Boomer, regardless of age. As a result, teenagers are defending themselves through the symbolic phrase: “ok boomer.”
