Who is the Winner of the 2022 IGC Sports Day?

GMUK Patriots won the victory at the 2022 IGC Sports Day.

On May 14, the Sports Day of Incheon Global Campus (IGC) was held in 2 years since the pandemic by the IGC Student Council Union and IGC Foundation at the center of great attention from the student body and faculty on campus. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to unite all of IGC since the last IGC sports event, in 2019, due to social distancing protocols. Hence, this 2022 IGC Sports Day was considered a meaningful event. The Voice of GMUK looked into the 2022 IGC Sports Day and students’ thoughts on the event.

The 2022 Sports Day, which was planned and operated by students of each university at IGC and sponsored by the IGC Foundation, consists of a total of five sports games: futsal, basketball, dodgeball, tug-of-war, and relay, while individual students and allied registered students organizations (RSOs) participated as players.

As the Sports Day proceeded with a tournament format, futsal and basketball participants had preliminary games on May 4. The games were male futsal and male basketball, and coincidentally, both games were held between George Mason University Korea (GMUK) and Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC). GMUK brought victory in both games, and in the case of basketball, Mason Korea representative players said that they had never won against GUGC but were able to win after consistent training and cooperative work.

On May 14, when Sports Day began in earnest, the male futsal game was held first after the opening ceremony. Players from GMUK and The State University of New York (SUNY) competed, and GMUK won with a score of 1:0. The female futsal game was also followed by two teams, GMUK and SUNY Korea. Female futsal players showed excellent performance, allowing many people to immerse themselves and enjoy the game. Following the futsal games, the male basketball game between GMUK and SUNY Korea began, and SUNY won the title.

During the halftimes, there were dance and hip-hop performances prepared by GUGC, SUNY Korea, and the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC). There was also another event to hand out prizes on this day, using bracelets with a unique number worn by students. Such hard preparation for the Sports Day, including snacks provided, boosted the atmosphere and further entertained the people who participated in the event.

Next came the dodgeball match, in which GMUK won the first match with UAC, and SUNY Korea won the game with GUGC. In the final round, GMUK and SUNY Korea faced off, but unfortunately, GMUK was defeated. The tug-of-war began shortly afterward when GMUK was eliminated from the preliminary round. The relay race, which cannot be missed on sports day, began for the last game. The GMUL players showed off their skills and took an overwhelming victory, making GMUK the final winner of the 2022 IGC Sports Day.

Following the lift of social restrictions and ease of COVID-19, the 2022 Sports Day was considered a special event for students of all IGC schools as some considerable time had passed since it was last held. “It was an exciting event as students from different schools were able to gather together and enjoy healthy competition. The IGC Foundation will continue to support such events that will be held in the future,” said Pyung-ryun Yu, CEO of the Incheon Global Campus Foundation. Along with this year’s Sports Day, the students of Mason Korea and other IGC universities are looking forward to more events for the unity of Incheon Global Campus.
