Throughout the semester, Mason Korea Student Council has been working in partnership with school management and staff to benefit the Mason Korea community. The Voice of GMUK has had a chance to interview Student Council President, Kieun Kwon, to gain valuable information about student council activities and the upcoming leadership transition.

What is special about this semester is their newest members and the reorganization of positions in the council. Kieun Kwon, former vice president, stepped up to the presidential role following the departure of former president Ilya Kim to the Fairfax campus. Upon her statement, Krystal Flynn, former Event Representative, was internally voted to serve as the Vice President, according to the current student council charter.

Moreover, the Fall 2022 semester has been productive for the student council. President Kwon mentioned an achievement the council made; the student council ran a Welcome Weekend for Fall 2022 freshmen at the beginning of the semester. It allowed students and staff to start the fall semester with connection, allowing them to successfully get a sense of belonging at the beginning of their journey at university. Besides, the council held multiple town hall meetings during the semester where students were given a platform to voice their various concerns, and the faculty was more than willing to help resolve the issues.

Furthermore, the council has offered student partnership benefits via two start-up companies, Sosok and Bedalgeek. Sosok offers discounts from cafes and restaurants affiliated with their service, which are many across Songdo, while Bedalgeek offers food delivery without a delivery fee if you order through their app.

Regarding the future of the Mason Korea Student Council, President Kwon expressed her faith in a team of leaders for the upcoming semester. President Kwon remarked that the student council’s charter is currently being updated, and the amended document will be introduced alongside the new administration. As the upcoming 2023 Student Council Election is in progress, the council has recruited candidacies for the next leaders.

Public Hearing Session will be conducted in person at G101 and live-streamed online on Wednesday, November 16th (12:00 - 14:00). Online Voting Session through Mason 360 will be from Wednesday, November 16th (14:00) to Friday, November 18th (23:59). Go figure out who may lead the Mason Korea community in 2023. The future administration is turned on your vote!

To the question of what she hopes to see as the next wave of administration assumes leadership, President Kwon confidently responded that she hopes to see just as much open communication with students, a further strengthened connection with the staff and faculty of Mason Korea, and consistent active participation among all student council members.
