Every semester, universities in Incheon Global Campus (IGC) take part in the IGC Sports Tournament. IGC consists of four universities: SUNY Korea (SUNY, Stony Brook, and FIT); George Mason University Korea; Ghent University Global Campus; and the University of Utah Asia Campus. Students from their respective universities engage in soccer, basketball, and badminton tournament matches against other universities within the IGC. However, it seems that the students are not enthusiastic about the IGC Sports Tournament. It seems that some factors are preventing students from getting interested in the IGC Sports Tournament.
First, the IGC Sports Tournament is held in the evening. Since the tournament usually starts after 7 pm, students who commute rarely come to watch games. In the case of other universities in Korea, sports leagues are held earlier in the afternoon, enabling students to easily enjoy the leagues. According to the Korea University Sports Federation (KUSF), all basketball matches of the Korean universities start between 3 pm to 5 pm, while volleyball and soccer matches start before 3 pm. Among the Korean university sports league, the Korea-Yonsei rival matches are conspicuous. On the day of their match, all classes are canceled to let the student body enjoy the competition that has a long history.
Even though the IGC universities have different systems from local universities in Korea, there are ways for students to enjoy the IGC Sports Tournament more than before. To address this issue, first, students can show support and engagement by making banners or videos cheering for their home teams and sharing them with others. Besides that, the matches held in the tournament should be streamed online to increase viewing accessibility for commuters.
The IGC Sports Tournament is a great opportunity not only to inspire the patriots but also to unite the IGC community members. Considering this fact, the IGC Sports Tournament is valuable enough to get more attention from students and each university in the future.
