Mason Film, a registered student organization, was launched in the Fall 2022 semester. As an RSO, they’ve worked on releasing movies, made the ‘Golden Bell’ quiz of a film, and screened the 2022 Qatar World Cup to interact with students by engaging in various activities. To talk more about the club, an interview was conducted with three members of the club: Sungjin Bae, Sunbin Kim, and Taewon Kim.
Sungjin, one of the club’s founders, said, “The club is motivated to produce, watch, and create films. At first, the purpose of the club was to enjoy movies with peers in a comfortable manner. However, as we dived into filming making, the process was more complicated than expected after planning, so we decided to make a proper movie.” While observing the filming process, Sunbin, President of Mason Film, mentioned, “In films, most audiences mainly focus on the actors and the characters that have acted. However, there are many staff involved and unexpected variables that happen while filming. Not only are there actors on the screen, but people behind the camera deserve the spotlight and credit too.” With this in mind, Mason Film has been an outlet of creativity for student expression.
Since then, they have created two films, Obsession (2022) and Love Reflection (2023), uploaded to their YouTube channel, GMUK Mason Film. Their newest film “Love Reflection,” released in August is about time travel inside school life. The movie was inspired by the famous film “About Time” (2013) directed by Richard Curtis. While making the film, they tried to give lessons about the value of the present, focusing on the characters’ emotions instead of focusing on the genre of the movie. Taewon, the treasurer of the club added, “In the film, we can look at the familiar spaces and actors through the movies, and it was done to draw out empathy from the audience.”
In discussing more about the movie, Sungjin explains why they chose stories like “Love Reflection.” He said, “The movie has a line about good things about being yourself, which we tried to tell everyone watching the film. Nowadays, it looks like people feel oppressed and stressed about life. It is important to break through the limitations of thought. School is a great place to practice this, and our club can be a good start for those passionate about a specific field.”
At the end of the interview, they gave a slight spoiler about the next film that is planned to be released in November 2023. It will be a horror and thriller movie, and auditions for actors are in October. Please watch Mason Film Club’s most recent movie, “Love Obsession” and look forward to their new and upcoming movie!
