The Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) was successfully held at the small theater in the multi-complex building on Sept. 11. Sungsu Lee, SM Entertainment's CAO (Chief Administrative Officer), conducted a lecture about the future of K-pop with over 150 attendees from Mason Korea community. The Office of Development and Strategic Partnership (DSP) provides interesting lectures (DLS) to Mason students to help them consider unique future career opportunities in a range of diverse industries.
DSP plans to invite Chen Si, the CEO of Inspire Resort, from Yeongjongdo for the next lecture in the series on Nov. 11. Students are excited to hear about the next DLS for valuable information or insight of experts to help extend business perspective to build their future careers.
With the discussion with our previous speaker Lee, students were able to gain understanding of the past and future of Kpop. He emphasized the importance of investing for the future. One of their teams has been trying to discover artistic talent and expand their industry over last decade. He also illustrated the new projects that will be released afterwards such as the debut of Navis and Trote-boy group.
DLS invites speakers who have outstanding careers in their work field. In an interview with Christina Cha, director of Development and Strategic Partnerships, she says, “DSP’s primary purpose is to reach out external parties who want to make partnerships with GMU Korea. For the development, there is fundraising for scholarships every year to our students. We form partnerships that align with strategic goals of Mason Korea.” She has responsibility for pursing and establishing partnerships, offering executive education for industries, fundraising for the advancement of Mason Korea, and managing alumni relations.
She expects that MK students would benefit as much as possible through DSP activities. “We provide sufficient environments for faculties and students, also manage alumni relations” like alumni mentorship programs, sponsored competitions (Progressive Play with NC soft and Global Beauty Marketing Competition with Ph. Hubby). Especially, the Global Beauty Marketing that will be conducted later this semester where the first prize winners get a chance to implement their marketing strategy with the company.
“The main purpose of DLS is to help our students expand their networks with the leaders, whether they are the CEOs of private companies or executive directors from diverse fields. The secondary purpose is to introduce our campus to those leaders to raise the profile of Mason to the public,” says Cha. “Through Q&A sessions, students get to directly interact with speakers, asking questions, sharing your Linkedin account, or emailing to interact with speakers to gain as much insight as possible.”
Cha adds, “Since our campus is in Songdo where it is hard to communicate, DSP invites them to your door… to make benefits for you. We are still trying to find the best way to reach out to our students. Please take advantage to meet prominent people you would otherwise not have a chance.”
