After several months of tension, North and South Korea reach an agreement to organize a leader summit planned for April. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-Un is planning to visit “The Peace House” located in South Korea, around late April for the third leader summit between the North and the South. If this happens, he would be the first North Korean leader to step into South Korea’s territory.
The events leading up to this decision goes back to the beginning of the year, when North Korea announced they want to send athletes to the PyeongChang Olympic Games. This resulted in highly ranked officials from both the North and South meeting together. North Korea also used the Olympics as a trigger to deliver the message that North Korea’s leader wanted to meet South Korea’s president in North Korea’s capital. This was a sign that North Korea was looking forward to talking with South Korea.
As a response, South Korea sent government officials to North Korea to discuss details of the leader summit and returned with positive results. It was agreed upon both countries to organize a leader summit, and denuclearization topic is on the table.
North Korea spent most of last year developing nuclear weapons and missiles, capable of transporting them. However, South Korea’s officials told the news that “During the meeting, North Korea’s leader told us that denuclearization can happen if we (North Korea) receive no threats about our ruling.” Along with this, the North also expressed that they want to talk to U.S. Although the location and date is uncertain, there is a possibility that the first U.S. and North Korea summit will happen.
As of now, South Korean officials are visiting nearby countries to ensure that leader summit will happen successfully.
