Each month, there comes a week where students, whether they are upperclassmen or incoming freshmen, walk around the campus wearing colorful pajamas, matching outfits with friends, or even recreating what they used to wear when they were little. The Student Council has adopted Spirit Week, a very popular tradition in American institutions, and it has been on full swing for two months.
The Student Council kicked off Spirit Weeks in March and May with various types of themes for the semester. In March, there were events such as Twin Tuesday, Throwback Thursday and Freaky Friday. This month, new themes such as Tropical Tuesday, Think Pink Thursday, and Fancy Friday were added. Mason Monday and Woke Up Like This Wednesday were repeated themes for the past two Spirit Weeks. Students could use their creativity to wear their outfits according to the impression that comes to their mind when they hear those ‘new’ names for the days.
Yet, Spirit Week to the domestic students is a game-changer. As wearing pajamas to school is not a common thing to find in Korean institutions, some students faced difficulties in keeping up with such ‘exotic’ themes. Freshman Youjung Shin stated, “Since the peers around me are not joining I decided I wouldn’t do it anymore.” However, other students who are more familiar to such events enjoy the Spirit Weeks to the full extent. Another Freshman Chaerin Lee, mentioned, “In my personal experience, most students in my high school in the United States, enjoyed, and I still keep good memories with Spirit Week… Students think it is kind of their duty to match.” The students have various opinions about how they think of the Spirit Week. Additionally, faculty members also shared their thoughts about Spirit Week. Professor Eunmee Lee stated, “Professors support the event and hopes the event will spread not only to the students, but the university as a whole!”
Due to unfamiliarity and lack of participation, it will take a long time for the students to become close to one another. Student Council is planning on creating more events along with Spirit Week, where there are more opportunities for students to be able to learn and interact with one another. As more Spirit Weeks are coming up, Student Council’s hope is that more students will be aware of the true meaning of the event and build their confidence to show their school spirit. Student Council plans to resume this event in the Fall as the new semester begins.
